Human Development Index
Every year since 1990, the United Nations Development Programme has studied the quality of life in many countries.
The Human Development Index
is the result of this study. The index uses factors such as life expectancy, adult literacy rate and per capita income to
determine the rankings. Of the 177 countries studied in the 2005 report, Norway, Iceland and Australia rank at the top, while Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone and Niger rank at the bottom. The full Human Development Report is available online and helps determine how countries are improving the quality of life of their citizens.
