The Slate 60, an annual list of the 60 largest American charitable contributions of the year. The 2008 list, which saw total donations up two-fold from 2007 at $15.78 billion, includes Michael Bloomberg, who donated $235 million to 1,200 nonprofit groups; and the Perot family, who pledged $50 million to the Musuem of Nature & Science in Dallas.
This year's listing had a record eight of the top 11 gifts registered as bequests, including the top donation from the late Leona Helmsley at $5.2 billion and the late James LeVoy Sorenson's $4.5 billion gift at No. 2.
