A rare disease affects less than 200,000 people in the U.S., yet 25 million Americans suffer from today's 6,000 existing rare diseases. The National Organization for Rare Disorders is a non-profit federation of voluntary health groups that, with education, advocacy, research and service, helps in the identification, treatment and cure of rare diseases. The patients and families who advocated the Orphan Drug Act, which provides financial incentives to come up with new treatments, started the NORD in 1983.
